Summer is almost here and it is time to head to the shore! The season of sun-drenched days and salt-filled breezes brings some unique opportunities to reduce living expenses.

Fit and Beach Ready

Want to get fit and save money at the same time? As the temps climb, indoor gyms sometimes lower membership prices to bring in new traffic. Or you could cancel your gym membership and do your exercising outdoors. Jog, golf, tennis or stand up paddleboard yoga, it’s all better in the summer.

Head Outside

Just being out of the house can help you save on energy bills. Turn off the electronic entertainment and enjoy the evening outdoors, playing lawn games, sharing cocktails with friends, or admiring the sunset and later, the stars and the moon.

The more time you spend out of the house, the less you need to run the air conditioner. If you’ll be out of the house for several hours, set the thermostat for a higher temperature and let the A/C run less, or turn it off altogether and open windows. The same goes for sleeping: skip the A/C, open the windows, and rely on natural cross-ventilation. If necessary, give the circulation a hand with a window fan or attic fan, which cost less to run than an air conditioner.

Eat dinner outside, enjoying cold meals like gazpacho, antipastos, salads and sandwiches. Less cooking indoors equals less heat inside the home, which means – once again – less A/C.

Another great penny-pinching throwback is the clothesline, which uses no electricity and you get the added bonus of a great fresh scent on clothes. You can put your clothes dryer in hibernation until October.

Fresh Produce

Nothing tastes as good as fresh, locally-grown vegetables. They don’t call New Jersey the Garden State for nothin’! Channel your inner farmer and grow your own. Too busy? Purchase in bulk from a community garden or farmers market and still enjoy great flavor, freshness and savings on trips to the grocery store.

Home Improvement Deals

Summer is the time for fixing up the home’s exterior. What’s on your home-improvement and repairs lists? Real Simple says the year’s best deals on tools and building materials are to be had in early June, when retailers offer savings of 50 percent or more on some items.
